Come to think of it, I’ve seen more of these on dead trees (picnic tables, chairs, countertops, poles) than on live ones. Weird.
Maybe it’s because live trees avoid the knives… But I’m no botanic/biological expert. Let’s ask Bob, he’s a tree.
The only explanation is that it’s people marking their trophy kills.

The reason is that it totally kills trees when done too much.
Trees have downward “arteries” in the middle, and upward “arteries” near the bark.
And then someone severed half your arteries. Dat’s sum bad news.
